Taiwan Patent Search System (TPSS) provides both Chinese and English pages, they have basically the same services including information of patent coverage, IPC/LOC search and full patent keyword search services.

Actually, TPSS is just finishing its upgrade since Jul. 1, 2008. TPSS provides a completely free service for patent search. For Taiwan patent application, the official language is traditional Chinese, so a user may use Chinese to make a full-function search in most parts. The full English translation made by the TIPO or provided by the Applicant is the future endeavor. Currently, the Applicant is required to provide the English title and abstract as filing the application.

In which, the patent search is functioning as Quick Search, Boolean Search, Number Search and Field Search, which are briefed as follows:

Quick Search provides two fields for further search, if a user owns the publication/certification/application number, the above field may be used. The below filed is a help for basic keyword search. More, Quick Search also provides to confine a range of date for the above search result. After that, the user may check the various options for displaying the result.

Boolean Search provides a powerful way to make a definite search – including “any word” and any field having an option selected from the patent/publication/application/classification number, title, inventor, applicant, IPC, and abstract. It naturally provides an aid of Boolean operations among those fields.

Number Search simply has a field for the user filling in the patent number, application number, publication number or certification number. Further, it also provides the user to range a certain period of time with some terms to be displayed.

Field Search provides various fields for the user filling in. The user may use the “Fields Logic Search” to make a search by indicating the interested field(s) with incorporation of the Boolean operations therebetween.

After operating the searching, it appears a screen shot as follows. The full version of granted/published document is allowed to download.

After one search is made, the search result and the terms will be recorded in current session, this search history may be used for next search by employing other searching conditions. If the user is a registered user (free to register), whole the search conditions will be recorded without session limitation.

According to the above screen shot of an example, a table with the various fields of information is provided. The foreigner may clearly understand this case through full page information. Unfortunately, it merely provides the English translation of basic information, title and abstract. The full version of the application is Chinese language. Moreover, it amazingly has some shortcuts for drawings on the right side column.
