用英文表達時間關係的時候，常使用"when"這類的時間的連接詞

根據Ex parte Karaoguz案例，權利範圍：a gateway ... capable of transmitting at least a portion of the collected information to a first one of the plurality of access devices, when the first one of the plurality of access devices is detected to be communicatively coupled to the gateway.

訴願委員會在解釋此請求項時，認為"when"不同於"in response to"（請看前篇），此句中，僅是要求當裝置通訊耦接至閘道器時，閘道器將傳遞部份資訊。這時，"when"僅表達一種狀態，在一段時間內的這狀態下，閘道器將會傳遞資訊，但並非解釋為，只要耦接（in response to），就會馬上傳遞訊號。

比如，提供一個網頁，其中提供資訊給使用者，之後，若有人要瀏覽此網頁，但是當中必定有些必要的訊號往來，達成握手後，才會提供資訊出去，故此例中，網頁的提供是持續一段時間(when)，當有人要存取此網頁時，經過一些步驟後才可順利連線，並非有絕對的因果關係，也就是B不一定會造成A（A is performed when B is provided.）
